COMMISSION
FOR NATURE CONSERVATION |

Publishing
is an important task of the Commission for Nature Conservation. The
first publication was an album of photographs "Eesti kaunis loodus"
(The Beauty of the Estonian Landscapes, 1957, editor E. Varep). It was
the first of its kind after the war. To get pictures for the album,
a photo-competition was announced by the commission in 1956. The printing
number of the album was 15 000 and it was sold out in a few days.
In 1960, as a result of cooperation of many naturalists, "Looduskaitse teatmik" (Nature Conservation Handbook) was published reflecting the that-day situation in nature conservation. It is used even today. In 1973, "Looduskaitse" (Nature Conservation, 836 pages) was published. This handbook (compiled by E. Kumari) has picked several awards and certificates of honour. A book to replace it has not been published up to the present day. Most reports performed on the plenary assemblies of the commission have been published. There are 26 editions of proceedings, of which 24 have been published. The edition devoted to the protection of the atmosphere was not given a permission (the topic was declared secret) to be published and its manuscript is preserved in the archive of the commission. The first edition of the proceedings "Teadusliku uurimistöö organiseerimise küsimusi looduskaitse alal" (The Questions of the Organisation of Scientific Investigation in Nature Conservation) in the series "Looduskaitse bülletään" nr. 1 (Nature Conservation Bulletin no 1, edited by E. Kumari), was published in 1959. The next edition of the proceedings "50 aastat looduskaitset Eestis" (50 Years of Nature Conservation in Estonia, 1961) belongs to the same series (no 2). From that on numeration was prohibited (it was impossible to start the issuing of a new (a)periodical publication either). All the following editions of proceedings have the topic printed on their front cover, like "Kool ja looduskaitse" (School and Nature Conservation, editor A. Valsiner, 1970), "Loomariigi kaitsest Eestis" (On the Protection of Animal Kingdom in Estonia, editor V. Lilleleht, 1992), etc. All in all, 40 collections of articles (two of them in manuscripts) or handbooks, in addition 23 small prints (resolutions of plenary assemblies, booklets) have appeared as publications of the commission (see the list of books). At the initiative of the commission, the publishing of nature calendars was started in 1962. The first calendar (1963) was compiled by V. Maavara. Later nature calendars were published by other institutions. |
