It is supposed that about 40.000 different species may inhabit Estonia. So far only about 23,500 species, i.e. about 60% of the proposed amount, has up to date been discovered. 16,500 species, or roughly 40% remains unidentified so far, although these species are mainly known to science.
Only 8600 species - about one fifth of all abundance of our life forms have been surveyed from the viewpoint of their conservation status and possible threats. It has been established, that 1314 species of the later (i.e. 15% of the known species) are either endangered or extinct.
